Author Guidelines

Guide for Authors

INHAD is a refereed academic journal that publishes original, high-quality scholarly articles in the fields of Hadith studies, Islamic studies, and related disciplines. All submitted manuscripts must demonstrate academic rigor, originality, and relevance to contemporary or classical Islamic scholarship. The opinions and interpretations expressed in published articles are solely those of the respective authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the editorial board or the institution. All submissions are subject to a double-blind peer-review process to ensure academic quality and integrity.

The following is a guide for authors who intend to submit their paper to the HADIS Journal. Submitting manuscripts in the correct format and in compliance to the requirements will expedite the review process and prevent undue delay in publication. The publisher reserves the right to reject or return manuscripts which are not prepared according to the stipulated guidelines.

The guide is available here: Author Guidelines and  Transliteration.

Note: If you are having problem downloading either file, send an email to jurnalhadis@uis.edu.my and we shall send the guide to your email.

Submit Manuscript

It is important that manuscript preparation is done according to the Guidelines for Authors. We deserve the right to immediately reject or withdraw submission that does not adhere the author guidelines. Manuscripts should be submitted through OJS at http://hadis.kuis.edu.my/index.php/inhad/login

Selection Criteria

HADIS is a masked or blind peer-review journal and the general guidelines for the acceptance for publication of a submitted manuscript are outlined as follows:

Relevance

Papers within the disciplines and areas of Hadith and its Sciences are considered. Comparative work that has at least one of the areas in Hadith is also acceptable.

Standard and Criteria

Manuscripts that exhibit most of the following characteristics meet the selection criteria for publication:

  • Content: Original research with significant findings that contribute to the discipline that also command a general interest.
  • Presentation: Systematic and well-organized prose whereby an argument flows and is easily comprehensible.
  • Language: Simple, lucid and highly intelligible to a general intellectual audience. There should be minimal usage of specialized terms, jargons or technical language; if unavoidable, an explanatory note to follow in parentheses.

Convention: Fidelity to house-style

Manuscripts that are not accepted for publication include those that are too elementary, poorly written and/or poorly organized, incoherent, too specialized in scope, unduly technical, or excessively long. Such papers that are rejected are promptly returned to the author.

Peer-Review Process

Submitted manuscript goes through the review process that takes between three and four months. Masked review is practiced whereby both contributor and reviewers are unknown to one another.

The Editor-in-Chief will have the first initial review of the paper on its suitability and relevance often consulting with members of the Editorial Panel. If appropriate, reviewers are identified again through consultations with the Editorial Panel and/or the International Advisory Board. Once review reports are received, the contents are noted by the Editor-in-Chief and the Editorial Panel.

If the review reports are unfavorable, the Editor-in-Chief in discussion with the Editorial Panel decides whether an outright rejection is advisable or to seek another reviewer before final decision is made. In the event of rejection, the author of the paper is promptly notified. If the reviews are encouraging, the author is also promptly notified; the review reports are enclosed for the author to undertake revisions in line with the reviewers’ comments and suggestions.

The revised paper when received by the Editor-in-Chief will again be evaluated to ensure that all issues raised by the reviewers have been addressed. If deemed necessary, the revised paper is forwarded to the reviewers for another reading. When all quarters are satisfied, the author is notified that his/her paper has gone through the review process and is now accepted for publication in a forthcoming issue of the journal.

Review of Manuscript

HADIS Journal practices double-blind academic review; both author and reviewer are unknown to one another. Every submitted manuscript, if deemed appropriate, will go through a review process that involved a minimum of one reviewer to a maximum of three reviewers. The number of reviewers is at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief in consultation with the Editorial Panel. The review may be lengthy but all efforts are made to ensure that an outcome be made known to the author at the soonest possible time. Delays are often commonplace as reviewers are working academics with heavy work commitments. Patience on the part of authors is greatly appreciated.

1. Language: Journal Hadis accepts manuscripts written in English, Malay, and Arabic.

2. Exclusivity: All manuscripts submitted to Journal Hadis must be original works. They must not have been previously published, nor should they be under consideration for publication by any other journal or platform, whether in print or electronic form. Authors are required to affirm the originality of their work and disclose any prior submission or publication status during the submission process. The journal maintains a strict policy against plagiarism, duplicate submission, and all forms of academic misconduct.

3. Submission Process: Manuscripts must be submitted electronically through the journal’s online submission system via Open Journal Systems (OJS), available on the official website. Authors are required to register an account prior to submission. The system provides guided steps for the process; however, if any difficulties arise, authors may contact the editorial management team via the official email provided on the website.

Manuscript

1. Formatting and Typography: Authors must use Palatino Linotype (12-point) for Roman text and Traditional Arabic (16-point) for Arabic script. The entire document must be single-spaced. Authors are required to use the official journal template available on the website to ensure consistency in formatting and presentation.

2. Referencing Style: Manuscripts must be prepared in a clear, systematic, and academically sound format based on recognized referencing styles, such as APA or any other style specified by the journal.

3. Language Requirements: For manuscripts written in Bahasa Melayu or Arabic, a title and abstract in English must also be provided to enhance accessibility for a wider academic audience.

4. Keywords: Each manuscript must include three (3) to five (5) keywords that accurately reflect the main focus of the study.

5. Length: The total length of the manuscript should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words (and must not exceed 25 pages), including references and any supplementary materials.

Abstract, title and Keyword Requirements

1. Abstract Length & Content: Each manuscript must include an abstract of 250 to 350 words that clearly summarizes the study's purpose, methodology, and findings.

2. Bilingual Requirements: For manuscripts written in Malay or Arabic, authors must provide the title and an additional abstract in English to ensure a broader academic reach.

3. Keywords: Authors must include three (3) to five (5) keywords that accurately represent the main themes and scope of the research.

Authorship and Contribution

Authorship must be limited to individuals who have made substantial intellectual contributions to the manuscript, including involvement in the conception or design of the study, data collection and analysis, interpretation of findings, or the drafting and critical revision of the work. All listed authors are expected to have participated sufficiently to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content. Furthermore, every author must review and give final approval of the version submitted for publication, ensuring that the manuscript meets all academic and ethical standards.

Acknowledgment of Funding

Authors are required to clearly acknowledge all sources of financial support received for the research presented in the manuscript. This includes grants, institutional funding, or any other form of sponsorship, which must be stated in the acknowledgment section along with relevant details, such as the name of the funding body and the grant number, where applicable.

In addition, authors are encouraged to acknowledge any individuals, institutions, or organizations that contributed to the research or manuscript preparation but do not meet the criteria for authorship. Such acknowledgments should be presented in a concise and professional manner.

Timeliness

Authors are expected to respond to editorial decisions and reviewer comments within the stipulated timeframe to ensure a smooth and efficient publication process. Given that the peer-review process may take approximately three (3) to four (4) months, authors are encouraged to submit revised manuscripts within two (2) to four (4) weeks upon receiving reviewers’ feedback.

If authors anticipate any delay in submitting revisions, they must notify the Editorial Office in advance and request an extension with valid justification. Failure to submit the revised manuscript within the given timeframe without prior notice may result in the manuscript being withdrawn from the review process.

In the event that authors wish to withdraw their manuscript from consideration, a formal notification must be submitted to the Editorial Office stating clear and reasonable grounds for withdrawal. Such requests will be reviewed and processed in accordance with the journal’s editorial policies.

Copyright Notice

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to sign a publishing agreement. This agreement ensures the widest possible dissemination of information under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. Under this license, authors retain copyright but grant the journal the right of first publication. A notification will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the final manuscript.

If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) within the article.

Permissions and Copyright Acknowledgment

Authors are responsible for obtaining all necessary permissions for any copyrighted material included in their manuscript prior to submission. In cases of uncertainty regarding copyright ownership, authors are strongly encouraged to seek formal approval from the relevant rights holder before the manuscript is considered for publication. The journal will not publish any third-party material without verified written permission.

Where permission has been granted, authors must clearly acknowledge the original source in accordance with the copyright holder's requirements. If no specific instructions are provided, a standard acknowledgment format should be used, such as:

"Reproduced with permission from [Author], [Title of Work], published by [Publisher], [Year]."

This acknowledgment must be placed appropriately in the caption of tables, figures, or any reproduced content.

All materials published in the journal—including text, images, figures, graphics, and multimedia content—are protected under the journal’s copyright policy unless otherwise stated. Any unauthorized reproduction, distribution, or use of published materials is strictly prohibited.

Permission to Reproduce Material
Authors are required to obtain permission before reproducing any copyrighted material that is not in the public domain, including figures, tables, schemes, images, or text extracts. Permission must be obtained from the rightful copyright holder—typically the original publisher or author.

When Permission Is Required
Permission is required when using:
1. Substantial extracts from published works;
2. Tables, figures, charts, or illustrations that are reproduced or slightly modified;
3. Photographs or images not owned by the author; or
4. Works originally published by another publisher where the copyright was not retained by the author.

When Permission Is Generally Not Required
Permission is generally not required when:
1. Recreating data into a completely new table or figure, provided proper citation is given;
2. Using short quotations under standard fair use principles; or
3. Completely redrawing or significantly transforming figures, charts, or illustrations so that they are substantially different from the original.

All reproduced materials must be properly cited in accordance with academic standards.

Manuscript Preparation and Quality Assurance

Manuscripts must be prepared carefully with minimal errors and must strictly adhere to the journal’s required format and style to ensure clear academic communication and a smooth publication process. The Editorial Board reserves the right to return manuscripts that do not meet these standards for correction, which may delay the evaluation and publication process.

Authors are strongly encouraged to use the official Journal Hadis template. While the Editor may edit for grammar and improve clarity without changing the original meaning of the text, additional editorial charges may be applied depending on the level of revision required. Therefore, authors must thoroughly proofread their manuscripts before final submission.

Manuscript File Type

Authors must submit their manuscript as two (2) separate Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) files. PDF submissions are not accepted. To ensure a blind peer-review process, the submission must be divided as follows:

1. Title Page: This file must contain the title of the manuscript, along with the authors' names, institutional affiliations, and contact details.

2. Main Manuscript: This file must contain the title and the full text of the manuscript (including figures and tables) but must not include any author names or affiliations.

Title

The title should be concise, clear, and informative, accurately reflecting the main focus of the manuscript. It must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS and avoid unnecessary abbreviations or overly general wording.

Author Names, Affiliations, and ORCID

1. Author Names & Affiliations: All authors’ names must be written accurately and consistently as they appear in official records. Affiliations must be listed directly beneath the authors' names and must include full institutional details and postal addresses without abbreviations.

2. Affiliation Linking: Superscript numbers must be used to link authors to their respective affiliations. The corresponding number should be placed immediately after the author’s name and in front of the institutional address for clear identification.

3. ORCID Requirement: Each author is required to provide a valid ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) to ensure proper academic attribution and clear identification.

Corresponding Author

1. Identification: The corresponding author must be indicated with an asterisk (*) placed immediately after their name.

2. Contact Information: Only the email address of the corresponding author should be provided, placed directly below the institutional affiliations.

3. Privacy & Formatting: To maintain consistency with Journal Hadis formatting standards, the email addresses of co-authors must not be included.

Manuscript Style

1. Headings: Must be formatted in bold, placed on separate lines, and numbered sequentially (e.g., 1. Introduction).

2. Subheadings: Must be italicized, kept brief, placed on separate lines, and numbered hierarchically (e.g., 1.1 Historical Context).

3. Numbering: All headings and subheadings must follow a logical, consecutive numerical hierarchy throughout the entire text.

4. Consistency: Formatting must remain strictly consistent across the entire manuscript in accordance with Jurnal Hadis guidelines.

Abstract Requirements

1. Structure and Content: The abstract must be presented as a single paragraph that concisely summarizes the study's specific research objectives, methodology, key findings, and conclusions.

2. Style Restrictions: Authors must avoid citing references within the abstract. The use of non-standard abbreviations should be limited, and any abbreviations used must be defined upon first mention.

3. Scope and Contribution: The abstract should clearly highlight the study’s original contribution to Hadith scholarship and its relevance to the broader international Islamic academic discourse.

Keywords

Include 3 to 5 essential words representing the research work, separated by commas on a single line.

Introduction and Literature Review

1. Background and Context: This section must provide a clear background to the study and present a concise review of relevant literature within Hadith studies or related disciplines.

2. Literature Review & Research Gap: Authors must critically discuss previous relevant scholarship and explicitly identify the research gap that the current study aims to address.

Methodology

1. Reproducibility: Authors must describe the research design, data collection, and analytical methods with sufficient precision to ensure the study can be fully reproduced by other scholars.

2. Citations and Modifications: Standard or previously published methods must be cited accurately. Any modifications made to existing methodologies must be clearly noted and justified.

Results and Findings

1. Clarity and Organization: This section must present the research findings clearly, concisely, and systematically in accordance with the stated research objectives.

2. Visual Data: The use of tables, figures, or charts is highly encouraged to enhance clarity and eliminate redundant narrative explanations within the main text.

3. Academic Discussion: Authors must critically discuss each finding, placing a strong emphasis on the analysis of Hadith sources and explaining their implications within the context of the study.

Discussion

1. Scope and Significance: This section must evaluate the significance, impact, and implications of the research findings. Authors must explicitly relate their findings back to the original research objectives and situate them within the context of relevant previous literature.

2. Structural Flexibility: This section may either be combined with the results (as a Results and Discussion section) or presented as a separate, distinct section.

3. Hadith Scholarship Focus: The analysis must emphasize the study’s original contribution to Hadith scholarship, particularly regarding text interpretation (fiqh al-hadith), legal application, or the broader development of Islamic knowledge.

Conclusion

1. Summary and Scope: This section must concisely summarize the final interpretations, implications, and core recommendations derived from the study.

2. Avoid Repetition: The conclusion must be presented succinctly and should not merely repeat the data, findings, or discussions detailed in previous sections.

3. Contribution and Future Research: Emphasis must be placed on the study’s definitive contribution to Hadith scholarship and its broader implications for Islamic studies. Authors should also provide meaningful recommendations for future research.

Conflict of Interest

1. Disclosure Requirement: Authors must clearly and transparently disclose any potential financial, personal, or professional conflicts of interest that could influence or appear to affect the integrity and objectivity of the study.

2. Academic Transparency: If no conflict exists, authors must explicitly state: "The authors declare no conflicts of interest." This disclosure is mandatory to ensure complete academic transparency, particularly within contemporary Hadith research and Islamic scholarship.

Acknowledgement

1. Scope of Support: Authors should acknowledge all sources of external funding, institutional support, or technical contributions from individuals and organizations that assisted with the research but do not meet the criteria for authorship.

2. Style and Formatting: The acknowledgments section must be presented as a single, concise paragraph placed before the references. The information provided must be brief, clear, and written in a professional manner that does not disrupt the flow of the manuscript.

References

1. Citation Style: All references must strictly follow the latest edition of the APA (American Psychological Association) style.

2. Relevance and Organization: References must be directly relevant to the manuscript's focus in Hadith studies or Islamic scholarship, and they must be arranged systematically in alphabetical order.

3. Accuracy and DOIs: Authors must ensure that every source cited in the text matches the reference list exactly. Where available, active DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers) must be provided for all electronic and journal source references.

In-Text Citation and Captions

Citation Style & Formatting
1. APA Formatting: In-text citations must strictly follow the author-date format: (Author, Year). For comprehensive styling rules, authors must refer to the APA Publication Manual (7th Edition) via apastyle.org.

2. Transliteration Requirement: For Arabic manuscripts, all in-text citations and reference list entries must be transliterated into Roman script to ensure global academic accessibility.

Accuracy & Integrity
1. Cross-Referencing: Every in-text citation must correspond exactly with the reference list, and vice versa. All references cited in the text must be listed alphabetically in the final reference section.

2. Author Responsibility: Authors bear sole responsibility for ensuring that all references are complete, accurate, and comply fully with Journal Hadis formatting standards.

Captions for Visuals
1. Table & Figure Labelling: Captions for tables, figures, or illustrations must be placed directly above or below the element (per APA standards) and formatted exactly as follows:

Figure 1: Theoretical Framework of Hadith Study.

Footnotes

1. Usage and Scope: The use of footnotes must be kept to an absolute minimum. They should only be used when strictly necessary to clarify complex terminology, explain cultural context, or provide critical supplementary information relevant to the Hadith research.

2. Formatting: Footnotes must be indicated within the main text using sequential superscript numbers (e.g., text¹).

3. Content: Footnote text must be kept concise and focused, avoiding extensive discussions or lengthy bibliographical citations that belong in the main text or reference list.

Abbreviations

1. Usage Restrictions: Abbreviations must be used sparingly and only for complex terms or expressions repeated frequently throughout the manuscript. Abbreviations are strictly prohibited in the article title.

2. First Mention: Upon first use in the text, the full term must be spelled out completely, followed by its abbreviation in parentheses—for example: Ahl al-Hadith (AH). Thereafter, the abbreviation may be used consistently.

3. Discipline Precision: The use of abbreviations must align strictly with standard, recognized terminology in Hadith studies and Islamic scholarship to avoid ambiguity or misinterpretation of classical sources.

Post-Acceptance Process

1. Notification of Acceptance: Upon formal acceptance of the manuscript for publication, the corresponding author will receive an email notification along with an official acceptance letter.

2. Article Processing Charges (APC): All accepted manuscripts are subject to an Article Processing Charge (APC) to cover publication costs, indexing, website maintenance, and administrative expenses. In exceptional cases, the Editorial Board may waive this charge in accordance with the journal’s official APC waiver policy.

3. Technical Review & Revisions: The Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor will conduct a final technical review to ensure the manuscript’s formatting quality and readiness for publication. If necessary, the manuscript may be returned to the authors for minor clarifications or corrections.

3. Author Responsibilities & Deadlines: Authors bear full responsibility for the timely progression of their manuscripts through the post-acceptance stage. If an author fails to respond to editorial queries or formatting requests within two (2) weeks of notification, the manuscript will automatically be deemed withdrawn.

4. Publishing Ethics: Jurnal Hadis strictly upholds global publishing ethics and scholarly integrity; failure to comply with post-acceptance deadlines without prior communication may impact the evaluation of future submissions by the same authors.

Production and Proofreading

1. Production Phase: Once all required documents and payments have been successfully received, the manuscript will officially enter the production phase.

2. Galley Proof Review: Authors will be notified via email when the PDF galley proof is ready for final review. Authors bear sole responsibility for thoroughly reviewing the text to ensure absolute academic accuracy—with particular attention given to Hadith text, translations, citations, and references—prior to final publication.

3. Turnaround Deadline: Corrected proofs must be returned to the Production Editor within two (2) working days of receipt.

4. Correction Policy & Fees: Authors are granted one (1) opportunity to submit corrections to the galley proof. Any subsequent correction requests made after this initial revision will incur additional administrative fees. Therefore, authors are strongly advised to check the galley proof meticulously before submitting their final approval.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their compliance with all of the following items. Submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to the authors.

  1. Originality and Exclusivity: Confirm that the submission is an original work that has not been previously published elsewhere, nor is it under consideration by another journal. If a legitimate exception applies, a full explanation must be provided in the "Comments to the Editor" section.
  2. Blinded Main Manuscript File: The main manuscript text must be submitted as a completely blinded document—devoid of author names, affiliations, or identifying self-references—to facilitate the double-blind peer-review process.
  3. Metadata/Title Page File: The manuscript title, full author names, institutional affiliations, and ORCID iDs must be provided in a separate, dedicated title page document and uploaded independently.
  4. Suggested Reviewers: Authors must recommend at least three (3) potential reviewers with specialized expertise relevant to Hadith studies or the manuscript’s specific subject area. Their names, institutional affiliations, and official email addresses must be uploaded in a separate file.
  5. English Abstract Requirement: A comprehensive English abstract is mandatory. It must clearly outline the problem statement, research objectives, methodology, main findings, and original contribution to Hadith scholarship.
  6. Plagiarism Screening: A Turnitin originality report must be included upon submission, showing a similarity index of 20% or less to ensure strict academic integrity.
  7. File Format: The files must be uploaded strictly in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format. PDF submissions are not accepted.
  8. Template and Style Compliance: Ensure that the entire manuscript strictly complies with the typography, layout formatting, and APA referencing guidelines specified in the official Jurnal Hadis template.
